LANAP

Gum disease is a dangerous condition that can ultimately lead to loose teeth and tooth loss.

LANAP® is an FDA-cleared laser-assisted surgery that removes infected gum tissue, allows the gums to reattach to the teeth, and encourages new bone growth.

Let Dr. Jeffrey Dolgos at Buffalo Laser Gum Surgery serving Buffalo, NY, save your teeth with this gentler alternative to conventional surgery.

The Progression of Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease or periodontitis, is an infection of the gums due to poor dental hygiene. As plaque builds up on the teeth, it spreads below the gumline, eventually causing serious damage like bone loss. Gum disease occurs in three stages:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease. If you have gingivitis, you may notice symptoms like red, tender, and swollen gums or bleeding when you brush or floss. This stage of the disease is easily reversed with a good at-home oral care routine and thorough cleanings with a dental hygienist.

Moderate Periodontitis

When plaque spreads beneath the gumline, it starts to affect the supporting bone. You may start to notice your gums pulling away from your teeth, creating periodontal pockets that further collect bacteria. Other symptoms include bad breath and an infection around your gumline. Some patients even report pain at this stage.

Advanced Periodontitis

As your periodontal disease worsens, the bone supporting your teeth continues to break down. At this stage, you may experience pain, loose teeth, and teeth that fall out completely.
If you have moderate to advanced periodontitis, you'll require the help of a dentist to reverse it. Our Orchard Park dental office is proud to offer the latest advancements in this field of dentistry.

The LANAP Procedure What to Expect During Your Appointment

This laser procedure is performed in two parts. During the first part, Dr. Dolgos will use the laser to treat one side of your mouth. During the second part, he will treat the other side. This makes recovery easier and allows you to chew with one side of your mouth at all times with minimal discomfort. The dentistry procedure involves these steps:
LANAP is unique because the laser procedure seals the treatment site as it works and sterilizes the area so bleeding is minimal and infection is rare.

Administer Anesthesia

Dr. Dolgos will administer a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout your procedure at our Orchard Park office serving Buffalo, NY.

Remove Diseased Tissue

Dr. Dolgos will gently place the PerioLase laser in the periodontal pocket, between the tooth and the gum. The laser will remove the diseased tissue while eliminating the germs and bacteria causing your infection.

Remove Calculus

Your dentist will use small dental instruments to remove the calculus buildup from the tooth roots. He will then use the laser a second time to remove any remaining debris from the periodontal pocket and to sterilize the treatment site.

Heal and Regenerate

The laser-assisted surgery will allow blood to form a seal around each tooth, creating an environment that encourages gum reattachment and bone regeneration.

Return to Office

After about one to four weeks, you will return to our Buffalo-area dentistry practice so Dr. Dolgos can treat the other side of your mouth.

Rest Your Gums and Jawbone

After your laser procedure, eat soft foods and take care not to clench your teeth; you don't want to overwork the bone at this time. Additionally, don't brush your teeth for a week to allow the gum tissue time to heal. Instead, use mouthwash.
